How to get the most out of your pet insurance policy

Your Policy = Your Pet Parent Map
Pet insurance policy documents include a policy schedule with your pet’s details and cover type, the terms and conditions explaining benefits and exclusions, claim limits, and what you must pay in excess.
These documents are here to guide you, not confuse you. Inside your policy documents, you’ll also find:
Reading these documents helps you avoid surprises, budget for costs, keep cover for ongoing conditions, and ensure claims are paid smoothly.
Get to grips with what type of cover you have
Besides knowing how much there is in the pot to cover vet fees, it’s worthwhile understanding your type of policy and how it’ll work should your pet develop a new health condition.
Lifetime: A lifetime (AKA reinstatement) pet insurance policy covers new and ongoing illnesses or injuries each year up to set limits, as long as the policy is renewed and premiums are paid.
Maximum benefit: A maximum benefit policy covers each new illness or injury up to a fixed monetary limit, with no time restriction, but once that limit’s reached, the condition is no longer covered.
Time-limited: A time-limited policy covers each new illness or injury for up to 12 months or until a set monetary limit is reached, after which that condition is no longer covered.
Accident only: An accident-only policy covers treatment costs for new accidental injuries up to a fixed limit, but not illnesses or injuries that develop over time.
Many providers offer a single vet fee limit – think of it as a single ‘pot’ to cover all new illnesses and injuries. Once you’ve gone over that amount, the ‘pot’ is empty.
Our policies cover per condition, which means that if your pet develops multiple illnesses or has several injuries within your policy year, your ‘pot’ can stretch further and cover more, as you’ll have a set amount for each condition.

What you need to consider at renewal
Think of your pet insurance as a safety net woven from treats, cuddles, and cover – there to catch you when unexpected vet bills come flying your way.
But if you let that policy lapse or decide to switch providers without checking their small print, you could be leaving your furry friend unprotected… even if it’s just for a couple of weeks.
Here’s why it matters:
Continuous cover = Continuous peace of mind
If you hold a lifetime policy, renewing with your current provider helps ensure any conditions that arise during your policy year may continue to be covered – either into the next policy year or even year after year.
Switching providers can be a waiting game
Most new policies come with a 14-day waiting (exclusion) period for any new illnesses, meaning you won’t be covered straight away. If something happens during that fortnight, you might discover that you’re on your own.
What if something pops up before your new cover kicks in?
If your pet starts showing symptoms during a gap in cover, a new provider might class it as a pre-existing condition, which usually means… no cover.
Vet bills don’t wait… and neither should you
From mystery limps to tummy troubles, keeping your policy active means that you don’t have to second-guess getting care when your pet needs it most.
Understanding what veterinary treatments typically cost helps you choose the right level of cover at renewal. From routine consultations to emergency surgery, vet bills vary significantly depending on the condition and your location.
