What is lifetime pet insurance?

Lifetime pet insurance is a type of pet insurance that covers new illnesses and injuries year after year, rather than for a fixed window. Each time you renew your policy, your vet fee limit resets, so a condition your pet develops today can keep being treated next year, and the year after. That makes it the most comprehensive type of cover and the one many owners choose for a young pet or a breed prone to long-term conditions. Whatever their age, from a 4-week-old puppy or kitten to a wise senior, there’s a level of cover to suit, and our cat insurance runs on the same lifetime basis. There’s more to it than the cover, too. Every lifetime policy comes with free 24/7 vet advice, a low £90 excess, direct payments to your vet, and money off top pet brands through our Perks & Offers.

What does lifetime pet insurance cover?

Our Elite range of lifetime policies covers vet fees for new accidents, illness and injury, up to the cover limit you choose, then reinstates that limit every year you renew. Here’s what’s included.

Helps with the cost of consultations, tests, scans, medication, surgery and ongoing treatment when your pet is ill or injured. Your per condition limit resets each year, so treatment for a long-term condition can continue throughout your pet’s life.

If your dog injures someone or damages their property, this covers the legal costs and compensation, up to £2.5m on our higher tiers. Included on dog policies only.

Cover for vet-recommended therapies like physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, chiropractic treatment and osteopathy, to help support your pet’s recovery.

Speak to a qualified vet by phone or video any time, day or night, about a worrying symptom, an injury or a change in behaviour. No appointment needed, and it never counts as a claim.

If you’re travelling with your pet, this helps with emergency vet treatment should they fall ill or get injured in approved European countries under the UK Pet Travel Scheme.

Helps you recover non-refundable travel or accommodation costs if you have to cancel or cut short a trip because your pet is ill, injured, goes missing or sadly passes away.

If your pet goes missing or is stolen, this helps with the cost of advertising and offering a reward to bring them home.

Helps with kennel or cattery fees if you’re unexpectedly admitted to hospital and can’t look after your pet while you recover.

Like most pet insurance policies, lifetime cover doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, which is anything your pet has had, or shown signs of, before the policy started or during the waiting period (the first 14 days for illnesses and 5 days for accidents and injuries). It also won’t cover routine or preventive care such as vaccinations, neutering, flea and worm treatment, or routine dental cleaning. Your policy documents set out exactly what’s covered and what isn’t, so it’s always worth a read before you buy.

Lifetime cover works on one simple idea: your vet fee limit reinstates every year. When your pet develops a new illness or injury after the waiting period, your cover helps pay towards their treatment up to the cover limit you chose. At renewal, that limit tops back up, so you can keep claiming for the same condition year after year, as long as you renew without a break in cover. You pay a £90 excess per condition each policy year (£250 for a third party liability claim), and once your dog turns 8 or your cat turns 10 a 15% co-payment applies on top.

FAQs

Lifetime pet insurance, sometimes called reinstatement cover, helps pay for ongoing vet fees, including treatment for chronic or recurring conditions like arthritis, allergies or diabetes. As long as you renew your policy each year, your per condition vet fee limit resets, so your pet can keep being treated for the same condition throughout their life. Unlike some pet insurance policies that only cover a condition for a set time, lifetime cover keeps them covered for life. It’s the most comprehensive type of cover for dogs and cats.

Many owners find it worthwhile because it offers long-term protection against conditions you can’t predict. Pets can develop illnesses that need regular medication, tests and ongoing treatment, which add up over the years. Lifetime cover helps make sure your cat or dog can keep getting that care. Whether it’s right for you depends on your pet and your budget, so it’s worth comparing the cover levels before you decide.

Lifetime cover is designed for exactly this kind of long-term condition, so a new diagnosis of something like hip dysplasia or arthritis can be covered, and stays covered year after year when you renew. The key thing is that it can’t be a pre-existing condition, meaning your pet hadn’t shown signs of it before the policy started or during the waiting period. If you’re unsure, the policy wording spells out how pre-existing conditions are treated.

There’s no upper age limit on our new lifetime policies, so you can take out cover for an older dog or cat, and puppies and kittens can join from 4 weeks old. One thing to know: once your dog turns 8 or your cat turns 10, a 15% co-payment applies on top of your excess when you claim.

The cost depends on your pet’s age, breed, size and where you live, along with the vet fee limit you choose, up to £5,000 per condition. Breeds prone to hereditary conditions typically cost more to cover. Lifetime cover usually costs more than time limited, maximum benefit or accident only policies because it offers ongoing protection, but it can save a lot over your pet’s life if they develop a long-term illness. The quickest way to see your price is to get a quote.

Premiums can increase at renewal, and this is normal across the industry. As pets get older they’re more likely to need treatment, and if you’ve claimed during the year that can affect the price too. Choosing lifetime cover while your pet is young, and renewing without a break, is the best way to keep continuous protection for any conditions that develop.

The main advantage is that your cover reinstates every year, so long-term and recurring conditions stay covered for life, which no other type of policy offers. The trade-off is that this level of protection typically costs more than time limited or accident only cover, and premiums can rise as your pet ages. For many owners, the peace of mind is worth it, particularly for younger pets and breeds prone to chronic conditions.

You can choose a vet fee limit that fits your budget, and insure more than one pet to get our 15% multi-pet discount. Every policy also includes our Perks & Offers and average savings of 57% on prescription meds, which helps with the everyday cost of care. Insuring your pet while they’re young and healthy also helps you avoid gaps in cover.

Making a claim is simple, and we’ll guide you through each step. You start your claim through your online account or our make a claim page, and our team, including experienced vet nurses, takes it from there. Where we can, we’ll settle eligible vet bills with your vet directly, so you’re not left out of pocket while you wait.

How lifetime cover compares to other types of pet insurance

Lifetime is the most comprehensive type of cover, but it isn’t the only option. Here’s how the others compare, so you can weigh up what’s right for your pet and your budget.

Perfect Pet insurance benefit icon for 24/7 vet advice

Lifetime Insurance

Lifetime pet insurance provides an annual vet fee allowance that refreshes each year you renew. It helps cover long-term and recurring conditions as well as new illnesses or injuries, offering the most comprehensive level of protection throughout your pet’s life. Discover Lifetime

Accident Only Insurance

Accident-only pet insurance covers injuries caused by accidents, such as cuts, broken bones or road accidents. It does not cover illnesses, third party liability or long-term health conditions. This is the most basic type of pet insurance, offering limited cover for unexpected accidents only, often at a lower cost. Discover Accident-Only

Time Limited Insurance

Time-limited pet insurance covers each new illness or injury for up to 12 months from the first treatment, or until the vet fee limit is reached, whichever comes first. After that period, the condition is no longer covered. This option can be a lower-cost choice, but it offers less protection for ongoing or recurring health issues over time. Discover Time-Limited

Maximum Benefit Insurance

Maximum benefit pet insurance provides a set amount of money per condition that you can claim until the limit is reached. There’s no time limit on claims, but once the allowance is used up, the condition won’t be covered again. This type of cover may suit pets with occasional health needs but not long-term or chronic conditions. Discover Maximum Benefit
