Perfect Pet Insurance
for your Shih Tzu
Your Shih Tzu is part of the family, and when something’s wrong you want them seen to quickly. We’re here to make your insurance choices simple, whatever your budget. Choose from a range of policies that come with vet-backed tools to support and guide you through the decisions that count. Shih Tzu insurance can help you with the veterinary costs for these common health conditions:
Eye problems
Those large, prominent eyes are easily scratched, so corneal ulcers and dry eye are common and can need repeat trips to the vet.
Breathing difficulties
As a flat-faced breed, some Shih Tzus have narrow airways, leading to snoring, noisy breathing and struggles in warm weather.
Ear infections
Hairy ear canals and drop ears can trap moisture and debris, so itchy, smelly ears are a regular complaint.
Bladder stones
Shih Tzus are prone to stones forming in the bladder, which can cause straining and blood in the urine and may need surgery.

How much does Shih Tzu insurance cost?
Shih Tzu insurance is usually fairly affordable for a small dog, it could be as low as £12 a month, though it can climb to £50 and well beyond. Their flat face means breathing and eye problems show up more than in many small breeds, which can nudge premiums up. Our Pug insurance page covers another flat-faced favourite. Age, postcode and cover level all move the price, and premiums usually rise as your dog gets older. These are broad market figures rather than our prices, so for the real figure, get your pet insurance quote today, it takes about 2 minutes.

FAQs

Find out more about Perfect Pet insurance policies with these frequently asked questions.

Perfect Pet dog insurance for Shih Tzus comes in four levels: Elite lifetime cover, Vital maximum benefit, Essential time limited cover and Accident Only. All four cover vet fees for new accidental injuries, and all except Accident Only cover new illnesses too, subject to the policy terms and waiting periods, 5 days for accidents and 14 for illness. Elite lifetime cover includes up to £10,000 of vet fees per policy year for all conditions combined, and the limit refreshes each year you renew, so the ongoing things Shih Tzus can be prone to, like eye problems or ear infections, can keep being treated year after year, provided they first showed signs after your cover started. Vital covers each condition up to a fixed limit with no time limit, and Essential covers each condition for up to 12 months from when it was first noticed or treatment started, whichever comes first. Every level includes complementary treatments like physiotherapy when your vet recommends them, and all except Accident Only add third party liability and free 24/7 Vet Assist calls. The usual exclusions apply with any insurer: pre-existing conditions, routine care like vaccinations, and dental illness (dental cover is for accidents only). With excesses from £90 per condition, per policy year, and for dogs aged eight or over a 15% co-payment applies on top. The policy wording has the exact limits and terms.
Shih Tzus are affectionate, outgoing little dogs that love company and adapt well to flats and family homes alike. Their looks come with a few weak spots though, mostly the eyes, ears and airways.
Whether insurance beats a savings pot is your call and depends on your own circumstances. Shih Tzus often live into their teens, so plenty of owners like having cover in place for the later years, but there’s no pressure either way, it has to fit your situation.
Age and health history, mostly. Flat-faced breeds are watched closely by insurers, and older dogs cost more to treat. Add your postcode, vet rates, the cover level you pick, and whether anything’s already on their record, that last one matters most.
Our policies cover new illnesses and injuries that first appear after your policy starts, subject to the policy terms. Timing is what counts, not the label on the condition: anything showing signs before the policy started, or during the waiting periods, is pre-existing and sits outside cover, with any insurer.
Shih Tzus can inherit eye and airway problems linked to their face shape, which is why many owners start cover while their dog is young and clear. The policy wording sets out exactly what’s included, worth a read before you buy.
The 15% multi-pet discount helps if you’ve a full house, and every policy includes our Perks & Offers, with average prescription savings of 57% through Hyperdrug, useful when eye drops and ear treatments become a regular thing.
Keeping the hair around their eyes trimmed and cleaning tear stains daily helps prevent irritation, and the free 24/7 Vet Assist line lets you ask a vet nurse first, no appointment, no claim.
