Perfect Pet Insurance
for your Labrador
Your Labrador is part of the family, and when something’s wrong you want them seen to quickly. We’re here to make your insurance choices simple, whatever your budget. Choose from a range of policies that come with vet-backed tools to support and guide you through the decisions that count. For a fuller look at the issues the breed can face, see our guide to the health conditions Labradors are prone to. Labrador insurance can help you with the veterinary costs for these common health conditions:
Hip and Elbow Dysplasia
Labradors can develop poorly fitting hip and elbow joints, partly genetics, partly how fast they grow as big puppies. It can mean pain, limping and arthritis later on.
Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid shows up more in middle-aged Labs, slowing the metabolism. Weight gain, low energy and coat changes are the usual giveaways.
Cancer
Labradors carry a higher risk of some cancers as they age, and lumps and bumps are common in the breed. Any new one is worth a vet check.
Laryngeal Paralysis
Older Labs are one of the breeds most prone to laryngeal paralysis, where the voice box stops opening properly, causing noisy breathing and a changed bark.
Osteoarthritis
Years of bounding about on big joints means many Labs develop arthritis in later life, especially where hip or elbow trouble got there first.

How much is pet insurance for Labradors?
Labrador insurance in the UK can vary hugely, it could be as low as £15 a month or run right up to £60 and beyond. There’s no typical Lab price, it honestly depends on your dog. Your dog’s age, your postcode and the level of cover you pick all move the price, sometimes a lot. As a large, popular breed, Labs tend to sit in the middle of the pack on price. Bigger dogs generally mean bigger vet bills, medication is dosed by weight for one thing, and the joint problems the breed is known for, like hip dysplasia and cruciate ligament injuries, can need surgery that runs well into four figures. That risk gets built into premiums. A few things nudge the price up or down. Insuring them young, before anything’s on their vet history, usually helps, and so does choosing a different vet fee limit. A Labrador pup can be covered from just 4 weeks old, and because there’s no upper age limit, an older Lab can still start a policy too. Every dog is different though, age, health history, even your local vet’s rates all play a part, so the ranges here are broad UK market figures rather than our prices, ballpark and nothing more. If you’re weighing up a similar breed, our Golden Retriever insurance page covers their close cousin, and you can get a dog insurance quote and see every level of cover before you decide.

Perfect Pet dog insurance for Labradors comes in four levels: Elite lifetime cover, Vital maximum benefit, Essential time limited cover and Accident Only. All four cover vet fees for new accidental injuries, and all except Accident Only cover new illnesses too, subject to the policy terms and waiting periods, 5 days for accidents and 14 for illness. Elite lifetime cover includes up to £5,000 of vet fees per condition, per year, and the limit refreshes each year you renew, so a long-term condition like arthritis or a joint problem in a Labrador can keep being treated year after year, provided it first showed signs after your cover started. Vital covers each condition up to a fixed limit with no time limit, and Essential covers each condition for up to 12 months from when it was first noticed or treatment started, whichever comes first. Every level includes complementary treatments like physiotherapy and hydrotherapy when your vet recommends them, useful for Lab joints, and all except Accident Only add third party liability and free 24/7 Vet Assist calls. The usual exclusions apply with any insurer: pre-existing conditions, routine care like vaccinations, and dental illness (dental cover is for accidents only). A £90 excess applies per condition, per policy year, and for dogs aged eight or over a 15% co-payment applies on top. The policy wording has the exact limits and terms.
Labradors make brilliant family dogs, loyal, gentle and endlessly enthusiastic, especially where food is involved. Like other large breeds though, they can be prone to some common health conditions, mainly joint and mobility problems, and that famous appetite brings its own scrapes.
The decision to insure is entirely yours and rests on your own circumstances, how you’d handle a surprise bill, and what you’d want covered. A policy spreads the risk into a monthly cost, and plenty of owners start early, our puppy insurance covers Lab pups from 4 weeks old. A savings pot is a fair route too.
Age and timing, mostly. A young Lab with a clean history costs less to cover, and anything that shows signs before the policy starts counts as pre-existing. After that it’s the vet fee limit you choose, your postcode and your vet’s rates, plus your dog’s own claims history at renewal.
You can insure a Labrador from 4 weeks old, and there’s no upper age limit on starting a policy with us, so the honest answer is: whenever suits you, knowing that cover only reaches conditions that appear after it starts. Many owners start young for exactly that reason.
An older Lab can still get covered for anything new that comes along, it’s just that whatever’s already on their vet record won’t carry across, with us or anyone else.
A few honest levers: pick a vet fee limit that fits your budget, insure more than one pet together for our 15% multi-pet discount, and use the Perks & Offers that come with every policy, including an average 57% saving on prescription meds through Hyperdrug.
The cheapest vet bill is the one you avoid, though. Keeping a Lab lean does more for their joints than almost anything, and our free 24/7 Vet Assist line and symptom checker help you catch small worries before they grow, without it counting as a claim.
