What is accident only pet insurance?
Accident only pet insurance is the most basic type of pet insurance. It helps with vet fees when your cat or dog is injured in an accident, like a broken bone, a cut or a road traffic accident, up to a fixed limit of £1,000 for each injury. It is the lowest-cost way to hold some protection, but it is limited. It does not cover illness of any kind, even an illness that follows an injury, and you can claim for each injury for up to 12 months from when it was first noticed or treatment started, whichever comes first, or until the £1,000 limit is reached. After that, that injury is no longer covered. Every accident only policy still comes with a low £90 excess, direct payments to your vet, and money off top pet brands through our Perks & Offers. It’s available for dogs and for cats, our cat insurance page covers the feline side.

What does accident only pet insurance cover?
Our accident only policy covers vet fees for accidental injury, up to £1,000 per injury. Here is what is included, and what is not.
Helps with vet fees for treating an accidental injury, like a broken bone, a cut or a road accident, up to £1,000 per injury. You can claim for that injury for up to 12 months, or until the limit is reached, whichever comes first.
Cover for vet-recommended therapies like physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and acupuncture, when they are part of treating a covered accidental injury.
Accident only cover does not help with illness of any kind, even an illness caused by an injury. It also excludes pre-existing conditions, routine or preventive care, dental work that is not from an accident, and behavioural issues. As the most limited type of cover, it is worth comparing against time limited, maximum benefit and lifetime cover before you decide.
Accident only cover helps with vet fees when your pet is injured in an accident, up to £1,000 for each injury. You can keep claiming for that injury for up to 12 months from the first treatment, or until the £1,000 limit is used up, whichever comes first. After that, that injury is no longer covered. You pay a £90 excess per claim, and once your dog turns 8 or your cat turns 10 a 15% co-payment applies on top.
You pay one £90 excess per condition, per policy year, which is deducted as part of your claim. Accident only has no third party liability section, so the £250 liability excess never applies.
Cover for accidental injuries starts 5 days after your policy start date. An injury that happens, or first shows signs, within those 5 days counts as pre-existing and can’t be claimed for.
We can settle an eligible claim directly with your vet, so you’re not left finding the money first. Direct payment is at your vet’s discretion, and where it isn’t possible we pay you by BACS.
An accidental injury is a sudden, unexpected physical injury caused by an accident, like a broken bone, a cut, a burn or a road traffic accident. Illness of any kind sits outside accident only cover, even an illness that follows an injury.
You can ask to change your level of cover at renewal. Anything your pet developed while on accident only counts as pre-existing under the new policy, so cover for those conditions won’t carry across, but new illnesses and injuries after the change can be covered.
Accident only keeps things simple, so the 24/7 Vet Assist line, third party liability and travel extras aren’t included. Complementary treatment is covered when it’s part of treating an accidental injury, and our Perks & Offers are included.

Accident only
Frequently Asked Questions
Find out more about accident-only cover for dogs and cats with these common questions from UK pet owners.

It covers vet fees for treating accidental injuries, like broken bones, cuts, bites or road accidents, up to £1,000 for each injury, including complementary treatment that is part of that care. It does not cover illness.
Accident only cover does not help with illness of any kind, even an illness caused by an injury. It also excludes pre-existing conditions, routine and preventive care, dental work not caused by an accident, and behavioural issues. For broader protection, time limited, maximum benefit or lifetime cover may suit better.
You can claim for each accidental injury for up to 12 months from when it was first noticed or treatment started, whichever comes first, or until the £1,000 limit is reached. After that, that injury is no longer covered, even at renewal. There is no limit on the number of separate injuries you can claim for.
Accident only is usually the lowest-cost type of pet insurance, because it only covers accidental injuries and not illness. Lifetime, maximum benefit and time limited cover all cost more but offer broader protection. The right choice depends on your pet and your budget, so it is worth comparing them before you decide.
There is no upper age limit on taking out a new accident only policy, so older pets can be covered. Once your dog turns 8 or your cat turns 10, a 15% co-payment applies on top of your excess when you claim. For a pet more likely to develop an illness, it is worth weighing accident only against fuller cover.
A pre-existing condition is anything your pet has had, or shown signs of, before the policy started or during the waiting period. Accident only cover does not pay out for pre-existing conditions. The policy wording explains exactly how they are treated.
How accident only compares to other types of pet insurance
Accident only is the most basic cover, but it is not the only option. Here is how the others compare, so you can weigh up what is right for your pet and your budget.

Lifetime Insurance
Lifetime pet insurance provides an annual vet fee allowance that refreshes each year you renew. It helps cover long-term and recurring conditions as well as new illnesses or injuries, offering the most comprehensive level of protection throughout your pet’s life. Discover Lifetime
Accident Only Insurance
Covers treatment for accidental injuries, but not illnesses or long-term conditions. The most basic, lowest-cost option. Discover Accident-Only
Time Limited Insurance
Covers each new condition for up to 12 months from the first treatment, or until the vet fee limit runs out, whichever comes first. A lighter, lower-cost way to stay protected, with less cover for ongoing issues. Discover Time-Limited
